Dr Muhammad Yahya, a British trained surgeon, pioneered Beating Heart Surgery in Pakistan in 2006. As is the case with all pioneers, there was a series of challenges to be faced. Thanks to the enormous help and high degree of dedication on part of the team members, we climbed a steep learning curve in a short time. The advantages of Beating Heart Surgery were so clearly obvious, that the only way forward was never to look back.
Now, when we have covered a long distance of more than fifteen years on the path of success, it is the right time to recall and commend the contribution of those, without whose help the achievements would have been more challenging. I sincerely extend my thanks to Dr. Yahya Saeed, an extraordinary Consultant in Anaesthesiology, Sister Saima, a superb OT sister, Mr Muhammad Alamgir, a highly intelligent assistant, Mr Mazhar Iqbal, a gem in the operation theater, Mr Mazhar Hussain Ojla, a gem I had in the ICU, and Mr Nasir, a brilliant Clinical Perfusionist.

There is no way you could thank all concerned at Hameed Latif Hospital for providing a state of the art Operation Theater Complex, dedicated for Cardiac Surgery and Neurosurgery. All the three theaters in the complex are fitted with the latest technologies for Laminar Air Flow system, Sterilization, HEPA Filtered Air Conditioning, repellant Glass Walls and brilliant Lighting.
The OT supplies run through a one way system, which ensures no used linen or instruments enter the clean environment of the theater complex before going through robust sterilization.
The required equipment is not only plentiful, latest and modern, but is always backed up. The OT staff is highly trained and responsible.
When you talk about the ICU in Hameed Latif Hospital, it is not just one. There are many. The Cardiac Surgeons at Hameed Latif Hospital enjoy a dedicated 8 bedded ultra modern ICU. All eight beds are supplied with latest ventilators, infusion pumps in plenty, invasive and non invasive monitors and all other required equipment.
The dedicated Cardiac Surgical ICU has been strategically located just next to the OT complex, but is separated by a modern 4-door separation system.
A blood gas machine is readily available inside the ICU to get instant lab results. Above all, the magnificent asset is a dedicated team of ICU staff.

Dr Daud Ahmad Khan
Dr Daud underwent a formal training programme in Anaesthesiology, after graduating from AIMC in 1998. At the conclusion of this training, he got his FCPS degree from Pakistan College of Physicians and Surgeons. He holds public appointment as a Consultant Anaesthetist. He is a specialist Anaesthesiologist in Beating Heart Surgery. He has vast experience in all other specialties, in addition to being a specialist in Beating Heart Surgery Anaesthesia.
